Description
"This book is an account of the experiences of Jesuits imprisoned from the fifteenth century to the present. It encompasses all countries where Jesuits have been imprisoned for whatever reason - political, religious, personal. Represented are a diverse group of individuals: those, like Isaac Jogues, who came to minister to the native inhabitants of the New World, and those who ministered in India, the Philippines, or Mexico; those who were caught up in the excesses of the French Revolution, such as Jean-Nicolas Cordier, and those who courageously opposed the Nazis in World War II, such as Albert Delp; those who participated in wars as chaplains, such as Paul Cavanaugh, and those who opposed wars, such as Daniel Berrigan. In many cases, we hear these men tell their stories in their own words - stories that describe not only the struggle to cope with grim physical realities but also the struggle of the spirit in communion with Christ." "The book is organized around a series of themes, such as Arrest and Trial, Voluntary Incarceration, Physical Suffering, Brothers, Prayer in Prison and Daily Order, with examples from the experiences of the men to illustrate these aspects of their lives as prisoners. It also provides an introduction to the Society of Jesus, exploring the philosophy of St. Ignatius of Loyola, his Spiritual Exercises, and the training that young men receive."--Jacket.
