Description

In 1934 the present writer undertook the task of carrying forward the annals of Natal from the point (1845) where John Bird left off to the conclusion of the colonial period. Selection was to be on a different principle. Certain aspects only of the complete story were to be illustrated by extracts chosen from a mass of material which was inevitably far greater than that which Bird had explored. The underlying object was to construct a coherent picture of colonial activity in relation not only to South African developments but also to the whole background of the Victorian Age.
