Description

Knutte Wester's public artwork 'Romanoparken- Song of a place' takes shape from a thousand-year history of anti-Gypsyism, persecution and oppression that meant constantly being on the run. A history that for many is still completely unknown. The work on the project has involved a long journey in the borderland between politics, municipal activities, contemporary art and issues concerning the national minority Roma. Areas with strong history, tradition and identity, and their own way of operating. This led to a complexity that emerged more and more clearly during the course of the project. The book Romanoparken consists of notes, letters and conversations that open up and give insight into the long collective process behind the work. It depicts the two years from the start of the project to the reformulation of the assignment and the start of the production phase. Through personal testimonies and different perspectives on contemporary history than those usually highlighted, the book also highlights the structural racism, discrimination and exclusion that travelers and Roma are exposed to in Sweden. today. At the same time, it tells about social centers and meeting places, about community, about the struggle for rights, recognition and vindication Knutte Westers offentliga konstverk Romanoparken ?
