Description
The current art market is dominated by an aesthetic of provocation. This happens in imitation of Marcel Duchamp's inverted and signed urinal: cans with poo, ashtray full of butts, banana with adhesive tape, and the like. In the so-called 'contemporary art' all standards of good art are haughtily rejected. This well-documented book shows that there are indeed criteria for recognizing good art. Four criteria, rooted in both Western and Asian histories of ideas, come to light here. Based on these criteria, Paul van der Grijp shows how you can assess all kinds of art expressions and shows us the way in the rich landscape of recent painting in Europe, America and Asia. Paul van der Grijp is a researcher at the interdisciplinary Center for East Asian Studies in Lyon. He studied philosophy and anthropology in Nijmegen and Paris, was a KNAW researcher and worked as a professor at various foreign universities. He previously published 'Passion and Profit, Art and Exoticism' and was co-editor of 'An Anthropology of Contemporary Art' De huidige kunstmarkt wordt gedomineerd door een esthetiek-van-de-provocatie. Hij publiceerde eerder 'Passion and Profit, Art and Exoticism' en was co-redacteur van 'An Anthropology of Contemporary Art'
