Mit dem zu seiner Zeit eher unüblichen Genre der Landschaftsmalerei schaffte er es, sich in seiner Region ein Monopol zu sichern. Dafürnahm er Anleihen bei einigen der großen flämischen Meister wie Jan Brueghel dem Älteren oder Gillis van Coninxloo, die rund ein Jahrhundert vor ihm gewirkt hatten.Hartmanns Schaffen zeichnet sich durch eine minutiöse Wiedergabe von Waldlandschaften aus, die er mit einer vielfältigen Staffage bereicherte. Lebhafte Szenen menschlicher Zusammenkünfte vervollkommnen seine beeindruckend weitläufigen Naturaufnahmen. Neben allegorischen Themen finden sich in seinen 03 Arbeiten auch religiöse und weltliche Inhalte.
