Fritz Winter, einer der wichtigsten deutschen Vertreter der abstrakten Malerei, zählt zu den herausragenden Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Gemeinsam mit Rupprecht Geiger, Willi Baumeister u.a. gründete er die Gruppe ZEN 49 und wurde mit seinen teils aufsehenerregenden Werkgruppen und Beiträgen zu den ersten drei documenta-Ausstellungen zur Galionsfigur der deutschen Nachkriegsabstraktion.Am Bauhaus in Dessau von Lehrern wie Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee und Oskar Schlemmer geprägt, wandte sich Fritz Winter (1905-1976) in den späten 1920er-Jahren der gegenstandslosen Malerei zu. Während des Nationalsozialismus wurde seine Kunst als 'entartet' verfemt, Winter fand nach dem Krieg jedoch rasch den Anschluss an die internationale Kunstszene. Der Band beleuchtet mit zahlreichen Abbildungen und Textbeiträgen Winters Position im Kunstgeschehen der Nachkriegsabstraktion und seine zentrale Bedeutung für die frühe documenta-Geschichte. Dabei wird der Bogen gespannt von seinem Frühwerk zur Zeit der NS-Diktatur bis zur Farbfeldmalerei der 1960er-Jahre.
