Zusammen ergeben sie eine bildnerische Parabel, die in Episoden die Geschichte von Alpha und Omega, den ersten Menschen auf einer Insel, erzählt. Munchs heftige Besessenheit vom Kampf der Geschlechter steigert sich in dieser Inselphantasie ins Groteske und kann als ironische Abrechnung mit der libertären Sexualmoral der Christiania-Bohème gelten.
